If you are reading this article, then you obviously have picked up the latest version of the Somerset County Chamber’s Community Profile and Membership Directory. Now that we have your attention, let us take a few minutes and explain the importance of this publication.

If you are a visitor (we host 5 million+ visitors a year), then you can see the array of destinations and attractions that make up our county, while highlighting all the various businesses that support the county, while offering a multitude of products and services to our visitors. The directory also highlights the outdoor quality of life of our county through pictures scattered throughout the book. That quality of life becomes apparent with our illustrious state park systems, ski resorts and our rolling farmland. Outdoor recreation is alive and growing in Somerset County. I forgot to mention that we are home to the most scenic 42 miles of the Great Allegheny Passage, which connects Pittsburgh to Washington DC on a 330-mile rails to trails bike trail. We are also home to Flight 93 Memorial Park, which honors the 40 passengers and crew on our country’s first battle on terrorism. Let us not forget that we are also home to the Quecreek Mine Rescue where the world witnessed the rescue of nine trapped miners. This is just a sample of all there is to do and see in Somerset County.

Now if you are a business or a developer, you may be interested in the business opportunities that make this county a perfect destination for your business. Strategic location to major cities (Pittsburgh, Cumberland, Harrisburg, Washington DC and Baltimore are all less than 3 hours away. Plus, the PA Turnpike, Routes 219 and 31 all travel right through the heart of the county. We have open spaces in our industrial parks that can accommodate virtually any type of business. In addition, the county has an outstanding workforce education program that involves all eleven school districts and is supported by the business community, which helps us develop the workforce for the present and future. Our outdoor quality of life is an advantage as well, as more people want to work in an area that offers this type of lifestyle.

Lastly, to those who are exploring living here, the county has an array of living styles that include resort style housing, small town living or more rural cabin lifestyle. Senior housing is also available throughout the county too. With our short commute to urban markets, you can enjoy an outdoor lifestyle with the ability to be in a city in about one hour. Rural living offers a sense of safety and is a wonderful place to raise a family or to enjoy those retired years with a lot of  activity choices.

I hope this helped with your interest in Somerset County and as always, just contact the Somerset County Chamber of Commerce for all your questions or information.

Sincerely,

Ron Aldom – Executive Director
