Residents and visitors to Somerset County benefit from a strong network of health care and human services, including three hospitals within a 45-minute drive. UPMC Somerset, the largest hospital and third-largest employer in the county, has an expense budget nearing $80 million annually, employs over 800 staff, and pays more than $33 million in payroll. This 118-bed facility serves about 3,900 inpatients yearly, treats over 140,000 outpatients, and handles nearly 18,000 emergency cases.

Formerly Somerset Hospital, it joined the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center on February 1, 2019, becoming UPMC Somerset. UPMC, a renowned $30 billion nonprofit health system, is Pennsylvania’s largest nongovernmental employer with over 100,000 staff, including more than 5,000 physicians. UPMC Somerset has enhanced services with a renovated ER, advanced medical imaging, expanded neurology, and the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. This $4 million investment features nine treatment spaces, four exam rooms, and onsite labs, plus access to over 600 clinical trials at UPMC Hillman and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine – delivering cutting-edge cancer care locally. Recently, UPMC completed a $16 million, 24-bed expansion at UPMC Western Behavioral Health at Twin Lakes for drug rehabilitation.

Founded in 1906, Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center at Windber delivers high-quality care with a focus on patient service. This 54-bed nonprofit employs over 450 staff, ranking as the county’s fourth-largest employer. Services include primary care, orthopedics, imaging, women’s health, pediatrics, home health, cardiac care, and more. It operates physical therapy centers in Davidsville, Portage, and Chestnut Ridge. Their home health service earned SHPBEST recognition for the third straight year, scoring in the 99th percentile for patient happiness and reliability. Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center at Windber recently earned federal Rural Health Clinic Network status from HRSA, unlocking extra funding to keep rural care affordable and expand outreach.

Conemaugh Meyersdale Medical Center, a 20-bed facility, has served the rural Meyersdale area for over 70 years since 1952. It provides 24/7 emergency and surgical care, plus services like home nursing, inpatient treatment, primary and preventive care, and community education through its Family Health Care Rural Health Clinic.
